Pay per click advertising or PPC programs as run by Google Adwords and other search engines deliver customers who are searching for specific search descriptions to your website. PPC adverts appear on the right hand side of search engine results - click on an advert and you are directed to the company or person promoting the product. The advertiser gets charged a small fee.
If you plan to use PPC to get visitors to your website, obviously you run the risk of paying too much money for advertising, so it pays to do a little research on relevancy and type of key words you wish to bid for. For example, if selling shoes, you might wish to bid for the keyword "shoe", but as every other person selling shoes also wants to use PPC, the cost of the search term or keyword will be expensive, as they as valued according to the number of people bidding for them, like as in an auction. If you make your keyword more detailed and specific, e.g. "boots brown leather, size 12", people that search for that specific search term may generate fewer results, but people who search for specific items will be more likely to buy if they find exactly what they are looking for. Long descriptive search keywords are referred to as long tail keywords. Long tail keywords should costs far less money, and be more effective.
