Many people dream of starting their own business, and some people are forced to consider self-employment during recession. It is all about finding the right thing and how you promote it, so more about the title below.

Here are 10 tips to consider when starting a new business:





1/. Completely revolutionary new product or service ideas are difficult to come up with, new product ideas are expensive to protect with patents, and expensive to set up tooling for. Look around and see what businesses seem to be doing well in a recession, and see if you cannot copy existing ideas. For example, stores that sell goods for a dollar, do great business during a recession, so why not start a market store selling goods for a dollar (stuff you pay less than 50 cents for)



2/. People love saving money in a recession, so buy and sell stuff that you can get at rock bottom prices, visit charity shops, close out sales, auctions selling bankruptcy stock or lost and found property. People have imported cheap goods from China, but you need to consider the potential hazards for goods that fail, toys that have the wrong paint finish, and the high costs of shipping and potential import tax.



3/. Global warming provides opportunity; we all need to do our bit to save the planet. Some people convert cars to run on bio fuel, or LPG, some people buy solar heating, or insulate their homes. Plenty of scope for business start-ups.



4/. Find a problem, and then solve it. Become an expert. Failing schools may bring in experts to advise on ways to improve discipline in the classroom. Many kids fail school due to disruptive classmates; so create a one-hour class explaining to kids why it is in their best interest to love discipline.



5/. Sell or represent niche products with little competition. It is important to understand the term of “niche product”. The perfect niche product is one that people have genuine interest in, that sell by the bucket-load, or sell for quite a high price (and generate high profits); that not many other people sell.



I promote and sell hovercraft, so let me explain why. Hovercraft are fascinating products, most people love them, would like to have a ride on one, or even learn to fly one, to experience the thrill of driving at speed from land, straight out over the water and back again at speeds of up to 40 mph. Hovercraft sell for more than mobile phones, so the profit potential is better, few suppliers manufacture hovercraft so there are not too many competitors, and as a consequence, Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising through the Internet costs less. The other big advantage is that many opportunities exist around the world, you can most probably think of several people, places and organisations who would need one or love to buy one. Pay Per Click advertising gets expensive if lots of people all try to obtain the same search keywords – PPC key words are sold by search engine advertising programs, in much the same way that products get sold at auction. If people all sell the same stuff, PPC advertising keywords are expensive, if you sell niche products, you have fewer competitors, so advertising costs less. Hovercraft can operate on all terrain, so I sell these to many different types of customer, from rental ride operators (great income) leisure users, fire and rescue organisations, SuperYacht owners, celebrities, military chiefs for homeland border patrol. 6/. Photography provides a low start up business opportunity. Buy a decent camera, and then take photos at weddings. Use free editing software downloaded from the Internet to edit the photos, lighten dark shots, reduce “RED EYE”, sharpen images etc. Most traditional wedding photographers produce an expensive album, but this is an old fashioned approach, so why not provide a cheaper service by loading all images onto a DVD to give to your customers. In this way, they can just print off the shots they like, or even upload them onto the Internet to share with relatives, who can print out the shots they like. In this approach, everybody is happy. Some people charge between $500 to $1000 for what takes around 10 hours max, to include editing, so your hourly rate is between $50 to $100 per hour.



7/. I expect that many readers are wondering by now – when does this guy mention the FREE SEX. FREE and SEX are two of the most searched for terms on the Internet, and the point of this is that by searching for products on search engines, you can assess how many people search for this subject, or product or service. So coming back to hovercraft for example (I know a bit about them) not so many people search for hovercraft so this is a good and bad thing. If you were thinking of becoming a marketing affiliate to work from home, you might advertise products like ring tones or mobile phones, big mistake. Hovercraft are far less common products and sell for more money that mobile phones. The point of this is, if you sell what every one else sells, the field is too competitive, so therefore the profit margins will be too low, and the cost of advertising will be too high, as there are too many competitors. Affiliates make money by selling products, or writing articles and posting Blogs like this one. Going back to my earlier example, Hovercraft are niche products that sell for lots of money relative to mobile phones and as they are less common, they cost less to advertise. By writing articles, or even copying other people’s articles, by placing these and promoting them on their websites, by adding a PPC program such as Adsense, everytime someone visits their website and clicks onto the Adsense Ad, affiliates get paid a percentage of the advertising revenue. As SEX and FREE are “tags” within the article, and because when the article is published to search engines, the search engines index these “tags”, and so people will find the websites with the “tags”. So if millions of people search for SEX, or FREE, or FREE SEX, more people will A/, find your websites among the other millions of sites, B/. might click on the ads on your website, and C/. as these search terms are so expensive to advertise, the AdSense revenue will be higher for you. If FREE and SEX are very popular search engine (ok, forget ethics for a minute, the point I make is focus on learning how to advertise) you will find other “Trends” by searching on the Internet for news. Today, as I write this, Tiger Woods has been in the news for the wrong kind of publicity, so affiliates like me might “cloak a trend”. On a day of scandal many affiliates cloak a trend, to either write about the subject to try get people to click on their website to sell them stuff, or to get people following them on a social website. So I might write an article or post a comment about “Tiger Woods”, not because I am interested in golf, but because everyone else is searching for stuff on “Tiger Woods” If people find my article, or Blog post, which links to me website, they may click on my AdSense adverts, then I make money. Trends disappear quickly so strike while the topic is hot. Search for trends via the search engines.
